GM & Ford Team Up On New Transmissions

New GM & Ford Transmissions

General Motors Company and Ford Motor Company have signed an agreement in which both companies will jointly develop advanced 9- and 10-speed automatic transmissions for cars, SUVs, crossovers and trucks. These new automatic transmissions, to be built in both front- and rear-wheel drive, will improve auto performance and increase fuel economy.

This collaboration enables both Ford & GM to design, develop, and deliver these new transmissions for their cars and trucks faster and at lower cost than if they work separately. This agreement marks the third time in the past 10 years that General Motors and Ford Motor Company have collaborated on transmissions. These efforts have enabled both auto companies together to deliver over 8 million 6-speed front-wheel drive transmissions to their customers around the world.

Ford Motor Company installs these 6-speed transmissions in some of US favorite vehicles, such as the Ford Fusion, Edge crossover, Escape and Explorer SUV. GM has installed them into a the Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Traverse, Equinox and Chevrolet Cruze.

According to other sources these transmissions could improve fuel economy 15% to possibly 20%. Of course we will have to wait till they have one built and tested to get the actual numbers.
